Is 'organic' legally defined in South Africa?
No. Draft organic regulations were gazetted in December 2006 and never promulgated. Certification is private and voluntary. Regulation R146 of 2010, regulation 47, restricts the words organic, free range, grassfed, pure and natural on labels and advertising, and section 41 of the Consumer Protection Act treats implied approvals as misleading. That is why Veldlist attributes every claim instead of awarding badges.
What does 'in the register' mean?
We searched the certifier's or scheme's own public register — Ecocert, Control Union, COSMOS, GOTS, Fair for Life, EASY-CERT, B Corp, the CrossFit affiliate directory or the HYROX training-club finder — and found the operation listed there on the recorded date. 66 of 455 listings pass that test today.
Where is raw milk legal to sell in South Africa?
Only inside the local-authority areas listed in Annexure C of Regulation R1555 of 1997, from herds enrolled in the bovine TB and brucellosis schemes, labelled Unpasteurised / Ongepasteuriseerd or Raw milk / Rou melk. Raw-milk cheese is permitted nationally.
Does Veldlist list pork?
No. Veldlist carries no pork producers, no pork recipes and no pork in meal plans, and its ingredient scanner flags gelatin, rennet and emulsifiers whose animal source is not stated. Halaal certification (SANHA, MJC Halaal Trust, NIHT, ICSA) is recorded where it appears in a certifier's register.
Is the app free?
The directory, the trust layer, the ingredient scanner, one training program at a time and the diary are free and stay free. Plus — every program and skill ladder, the meal planner and shopping list, the coach, label photo reading, sync and export — is R899 a year, paid once through Yoco. There is no auto-renewal and no card kept on file.
Can a business buy a better assurance level?
No. Placement can be bought (verified, featured, market pack and chain listings); the assurance level is recorded from registers and operators' own statements and is never for sale.
Which parts of South Africa are covered?
All nine provinces plus nationwide online sellers — Eastern Cape 25, Free State 14, Gauteng 103, Mpumalanga 6, Northern Cape 11, KwaZulu-Natal 45, Limpopo 12, North West 19, Western Cape 217. Coverage is deepest in the Western Cape and Gauteng; every province has its own page.
